Back Purging in Stainless and Duplex Pipe Welding: Why the Root Side Matters
Back Purging in Stainless and Duplex Pipe Welding: Why the Root Side Matters
When stainless steel or duplex piping is welded from the outside, the root side is still exposed to the atmosphere inside the pipe. Without protection, hot metal can react with oxygen and form heavy oxidation commonly described as sugaring. The surface may look rough, but the concern is deeper: oxidation can reduce corrosion performance and create an unacceptable internal profile.
What Back Purging Does
Back purging replaces oxygen near the root with an inert shielding gas. The goal is to protect the underside of the weld during root formation and while the metal remains hot enough to oxidize rapidly.
Sealing the Purge Zone
Effective purging does not require filling an entire piping system. Purge dams or barriers can isolate a smaller volume around the joint. Openings, vents, hoses, and temporary seals must be arranged so air is displaced without creating pressure that disturbs the molten root.
Flow Rate Is Not the Same as Purge Quality
Excessive gas flow can create turbulence and draw air into the purge zone. Insufficient flow may leave oxygen trapped near the joint. A controlled displacement process, followed by verification at the outlet, is more reliable than assuming that a high flow rate guarantees protection.
Duplex Requires Additional Discipline
Duplex and super duplex stainless steels depend on a balanced microstructure for strength and corrosion resistance. Purge protection is important, but it must be combined with controlled heat input, interpass temperature, filler selection, and travel technique.
When Can the Purge Be Reduced?
The procedure should define how long root-side shielding is maintained. Ending the purge too early can oxidize subsequent hot passes even when the root bead initially appeared clean.
- Use clean, dry purge gas
- Minimize purge volume with suitable barriers
- Provide a controlled vent path
- Verify oxygen condition rather than guessing
- Follow the qualified procedure for purge duration
